Men's Soccer Stumbles Against Queens, 4-2

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2016) - Molloy's men's soccer team dropped their final game of the regular season, falling 4-2 to Queens College on Sunday (Oct. 30). With the loss, the Lions fell to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in East Coast Conference action. Queens improved to 6-7-4 on the season and 3-4-2 in conference play with the win.

The Knights started the game off with the first shot, as Nikolas Maher (New Lennox, Ill.) sent the ball into the arms of goalkeeper Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) one minute and 46 seconds into the contest. Solid defensive play from both squads prevented any further shots from being taken until Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) was able to send one just wide of the net in the 19th minute. The Lions continued fighting, but were unable to get any shots past the Queens defenders. In the 27th minute, senior Lucio Sorto (Baldwin, N.Y.) attempted a shot, but keeper James Brostowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) was able to make the save. The game would remain scoreless until the 33rd minute of action, when Maher sent a cross to freshman Emgi Gousse (Amityville, N.Y.), who sent the ball past Bonilla to give Queens the 1-0 lead. Molloy, however, quickly responded when senior Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) dribbled past two defenders, and sent the ball into the lower right corner from ten yards out. Nikolas Touros (Bellrose, N.Y.) and Matt Miller (Oceanside, N.Y.) each took shots to break the tie, but neither were on target.

Molloy opened the second half with shots from Whyte and Paul Morales (Jackson Heights, N.Y.), but Brostowski was able to stop both attempts. Maher would ultimately break the tie as he sent a shot past Bonilla in the 53rd minute. The Knights would increase their lead in the 66th minute, as Andras Breuer (Budapest, Hungary) scored on a penalty kick. The Lions would not quit, and brought the score to 3-2 following a header goal from senior Kyle Brennan (Hicksville, N.Y.), assisted by Whyte. The Lions fired six shots in the final minutes of the game in an attempt to send the game to overtime, but a late goal by Gousse sealed their fate and gave Queens the 4-2 win. Molloy's loss comes despite a 21-11 shot advantage. Whyte led the team, firing eight shots and picking up three points in the effort.

The Lions return to action on Thursday (Nov. 3) as they host New York Institute of Technology in the first round of the East Coast Conference playoffs. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
