Women's Soccer Tripped Up in 2-0 Road Finale at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 28, 2016) - Two goals late in the first half were enough to tip the scales away from the Molloy College women's soccer team on Friday (Oct. 28) as the Lions were downed by a 2-0 score versus American International College in Springfield, Mass.

Molloy (6-8-2) was outshot 17-4 in the match, only getting shots on target from seniors Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.) and Courtney Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.). Both attempts were saved by Yellowjackets goalie Madison Brown (Medford, N.Y.), who picked up her ninth win of the season and sixth shutout on the fall campaign. The hosts scored in the 36th and 45th minute to open and close the scoring account, with graduate students Merissa Phipps (Monson, Mass.) and Miko Iida (Ichihara-Shi, Japan) earning the markers for AIC (11-7).

The goal by Phipps---the first of her season---came from a shot at the top of the box, which beat goalie Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.) to the lower-left side of the net. Senior captain Jessica Margaretta (Coloniers, France) registered an assist on the score for the Yellowjackets. Then with twenty seconds to play in the half, Iida took advantage of a ball cleared off the goal line to rifle a shot off the left post and into the back of the net for her first career marker.

Molloy will close out the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 30) when the Lions host Queens College in a 12 p.m. start time at RVC Sports Complex. Prior to the game, the maroon and white will honor its five graduating seniors: Valente, Noakes, Jessica Malone (Long Beach, N.Y.)Gianna Jennosa (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and Gabrielle Batista (Hicksville, N.Y.).
