Jimenez Launches Men's Soccer to 1-0 Victory Over Mercy

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2016) - A goal in the 43rd minute of action would be all that was necessary for Molloy College to earn a 1-0 victory against Mercy College on Saturday (Oct. 22.). The Lions improve to 10-3 overall and 7-1in East Coast Conference play. With the loss, Mercy falls to 7-4-3 on the season, and 2-4-2 in conference play.

Molloy fired the first shot of the game, as senior Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) sent the ball flying just wide of the net. Lucca Lacerda (Passos, Brazil) would answer for the Mavericks, but sophomore keeper Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) was able to make the save. The two teams would exchange attempts to get going offensively, but strong defensive play by both teams kept the game scoreless. Although Molloy was only able to put one shot on goal on the evening, the Lions made the most of the opportunity. At the 42:43 marker, Whyte took a corner kick that Jimenez was able to send straight past Mercy keeper Kwantarian Van der Lara (Conway, Ark.) to give Molloy their 1-0 lead. The maroon and white put out an impressive defensive performance to keep Mercy off the board and give Molloy the win.

The Mavericks launched a total of 22 shots, six of which were on goal. The Lions would finish with ten shots in the effort. Mercy would also end with an 8-5 corner kick advantage. Whyte led the Lions with a total of five shots, followed by freshman Anthony Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.), who totaled three. Bonilla would make six saves to keep the Mavericks scoreless and earn his sixth shutout of the season.

Molloy will head on the road as they face Bloomsburg University on Tuesday (Oct. 25) at 4:00 p.m. in Bloomsburg, Pa.
