Cestaro Wins It In Overtime For Men's Soccer's Sixth Straight Conference Win

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Oct. 15, 2016) - Freshman Anthony Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) beat Bridgeport goalkeeper Fabio Junior (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) for the second time in the contest as the Molloy College men's soccer team survived a gritty battle with UB to knock off the Purple Knights by a 2-1 score in overtime on Saturday (Oct. 15). The Lions leave Connecticut and return home with a 9-2 record and a 6-0 mark in East Coast Conference play; Bridgeport remains winless on the season at 0-9-2, 0-3-2 in ECC competition.

Cestaro netted the game's opening marker just before the halftime break, as the freshman was on the receiving end of a feed from Lucio Sorto (Baldwin, N.Y.) following a free kick. The ball would be dribbled by Cestaro into the box where he would punctuate a shot past Junior into the net as Molloy took a 1-0 lead at 42:30 into the contest. The lead would stay until the dying minutes of the contest, with the Purple Knights buzzing around until the 88th minute. Following a corner kick, junior midfielder Femi Coker (Johannesburg, South Africa) chipped a shot past keeper Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) for a sucker-punch goal to even the score at one-all and force the extra session.

The hosts took the first shot of the overtime period as Erlend Skagstad (Mjoendalen, Norway) rifled an attempt that sailed high over the crossbar. Determined and undaunted, Molloy set out to win in the extra frame and did just that as Cestaro netted a pass from Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) into the back of the net to set off a celebration.

Molloy held a 14-12 shots advantage and an 8-6 edge on targets in the victory, with Poetzsch attempting seven shots and getting five attempts on net. In the win, Bonilla made five saves to boost his overall record on the season to eight wins and two losses.

The maroon and white will have a respite until Thursday evening when the Lions host their biggest test of the season against LIU Post. The Pioneers are currently the fifth-ranked team in the nation and are the only team aside from Molloy to be unbeaten in conference play at 3-0-1. The action begins at RVC Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
