Volleyball Suffers Three-Set Conquest At Hands of Purple Knights Tuesday

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2016) - The Molloy College volleyball team was on the wrong end of a three-setter on Tuesday night (Oct. 11) as the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights swept away the hosting Lions at Quealy Gymnasium. Set scores favored Bridgeport (8-8, 5-1 ECC) by a count ot 25-22, 25-14 and 25-22 over Molloy (4-17, 1-5 ECC).

The maroon and white struggled to convert on many attacks, as the team hit just .112 with 29 kills in 107 total attempts. First-year hitters Shannon Wren (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Hailey Wehr (Wading River, N.Y.) led the Lions with seven kills apiece while right-side hitter Danielle Williams (Alba, Texas) and middle blocker Devon Hagerstrom (Bethpage, N.Y.) added six kills each. Freshman setter Sophia Smith (Georgetown, Texas) collected 25 assists in the loss while libero Dakota O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.) added nine digs. Williams and Jessica Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y.) both posted eight-dig evenings for Molloy as well.

Bridgeport hit .369 with 48 kills in 103 attempts, including a third-set percentage of .457 (19 kills, 35 attempts). Senior Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the way with 13 kills and freshman Claire Anderson (Oak Harbor, Wash.) punched out 12 kills of her own. Sophomore setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) collected 38 assists for the Purple Knights and back row play was led by a solid 16-dig performance from Amelie Guinci (Cannes, France).

The Lions played well in the bookend sets against the opposition, falling in the first set after a 22-22 tie. The third set saw Molloy lead most of the way again, but Bridgeport won six of the final nine points following an even score of 19-all.

Molloy College will return to the hardwood in one week's time as the Lions face Pace University in Pleasantville on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
