EAST ROCKAWAY, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2016) - A stellar defensive effort from the Molloy College field hockey team came up heartbreakingly short as the Newberry College Wolves claimed a 1-0 victory in extra time against the Lions on Saturday (Oct. 1) at Bay Park in East Rockaway.
Molloy (1-5) was outshot 37-1 by the visitors from South Carolina but the maroon and white were not outshone in heart and determination. A spirited defensive effort, spearheaded by sophomore
Ellyn Byrnes (Huntington, N.Y.) and juniors
Kelly Saronka (Wantagh, N.Y.) and
Christina Carbone (East Meadow, N.Y.), kept the Wolves at bay for seventy-plus minutes of playing time. Byrnes had a defensive save in the contest on one of only two shots that beat graduate goalie
Arianna Ovadia (East Meadow, N.Y.)---who ended the contest with 16 total saves.
The Lions had a fine opportunity for a goal in the first half as
Lauren Keller (Westbury, N.Y.) found herself alone on a breakway in the 19th minute of the contest. However, Keller was stonewalled on an attempt by a prone Dakota Elzy (Louisville, Ky.) as the junior goalie for the visiting side slid to the turf to block Molloy from attaining the first goal of the matchup.
Newberry (2-5) scored its lone goal in the 76th minute as freshman Maia Lee (Port Penn, Del.) fed senior forward Caitlyn Warren (Richmond, Va.) with space in the seven-on-seven extra session. Warren fired a wicked screamer across the turf that banged against the wooden placard affixed to the back of the net to set off a celebration on the Wolves' sideline.
Molloy will shoot for another victory, this time playing at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford on Sunday (Oct. 2) with a 1 p.m. contest versus Franklin Pierce University.
