Box Score NYACK, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2015) - The Molloy College men's soccer team struck for two goals in a three-minute span, then held on for a 2-1 victory over Nyack Saturday at Moseley Field.
The Lions (1-0) started the contest with a bit too much eagerness, as in the first ten minutes, the team was called for two fouls and three offsides penalties. Sophomore midfielder
Lucas Munoz (Great River, N.Y.) facilitated the first great chance for the maroon and white, as he put a shot on net in the 13th minute. The attempt, however, was saved by Nyack freshman goalie Wiktor Lasota (Warsaw, Poland). The Warriors (0-2) would collect four shots within the next 17 minutes of action, but it would be Molloy junior forward
Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) who would strike to put the maroon and white ahead. With Lasota out of goal, Whyte took advantage to slot the shot in the lower right corner of the net, scoring his first goal in a Lions uniform. Whyte would capitalize three minutes later on another marker to give Molloy a crucial 2-0 edge.
The next sixty minutes of the game proved to be a chippy free-for-all as Nyack woke up with a vengeance, unleashing eight shots on Molloy sophomore keeper
Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.). The Warriors eventually found the back of the net in the 70th minute, as sophomore Reinaldo Sanchez (West New York, N.J.) cut Molloy's lead to one goal. Sanchez had a chance for the equalizer in the 80th minute, but Tappeto came up strong to make the save, and Nyack would not score the rest of the way.
The home side would outshoot Molloy in this contest by a 13-7 margin, with the Warriors earning five shots on goal to the Lions' four. However, Tappeto made four stops to keep his team ahead in the contest, as opposed to just two saves for Lasota. Molloy collected five corner kicks, while Nyack only had three chances from the corner spot. For the Lions, Whyte led with four shots and two goals, while Munoz added two shots and senior offensive midfielder
Anthony Posillico (East Meadow, N.Y.) had a shot, as well.
Head Coach
Danny Longo and the Lions continue their three-game season-opening road trip on Tuesday (Sept. 8) as the maroon and white head to New Jersey for a non-conference tilt against Caldwell at 4 p.m.
