Men's Soccer Drops Wild Contest to Franklin Pierce, 3-1

Box Score RINDGE, N.H. (Sept. 12, 2015) - In what proved to be a wild contest, the Molloy College men's soccer team came out on the losing end of a 3-1 decision at Franklin Pierce on Saturday in New Hampshire.

The scoring started very early, as freshman midfielder Lloyd Ross (London, England) tucked a free kick from 25 yards out inside the left post past Molloy goalkeeper Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.) to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. The Lions would be the benefactor of a foul in the box against the home side in the tenth minute, and junior forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) calmly cashed in a penalty kick for his fourth goal of the year and the equalizer in the match. However, Franklin Pierce would retake the lead not thirty seconds later, as this time the maroon and white were whistled inside the penalty area for a foul. Graduate midfielder David Magee (Lurgan, Ireland) struck gold with his PK attempt to give the home side a lead they would not relinquish.

The game, however, will be most known for its chippiness and the willingness of the officiating staff to award cards and infractions. After senior forward Marius Preber (Jessenheim, Norway) scored what would be the final goal of the match in the 42nd minute of the contest, the yellow cards came out to begin the second half. Molloy red-shirt senior Lester Franco (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was the first to be written in the referee's book in the 49th minute, followed by Franklin Pierce defender Hamish Cadigan (Christchurch, New Zealand) being booked twenty minutes later. Tempers would flare up further as sophomore forward Lucas Munoz (Hicksville, N.Y.) received a cautionary yellow in the 72nd minute of play. With both sides being extra chippy towards the end of the contest, the Lions were given another yellow card by the official for a team infraction.

The maroon and white outshot the home side by a 20-11 margin, but Ravens goalie Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) made seven saves in net to keep his team ahead. On the flip side, Tappeto was credited for just one save in net for the Lions. Junior forward Kyle Poetszch (Hicksville, N.Y.) took five shots on net to lead both sides, while Whyte, Munoz and Dale McNevin (Centereach, N.Y.) each put two shots on cage for Molloy in the losing effort.

The Lions will now open the home portion of their schedule with a 6 p.m. contest on Wednesday (Sept. 16) at the Skelos Sports Complex versus Dominican (N.Y.).
