BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2015) - The Molloy College cross country program opened its 2015 campaign with an impressive showing in both meets of the Fordham Fiasco/Ed Joyce Memorial Invitational on Saturday. The men's cross country team placed second out of 11 schools, while the women's team was sixth-best in the 14-team field that ran in the upper borough of New York City.
In the men's five-mile run, the maroon and white harriers were paced by seniors
Mike Darnell (Wantagh, N.Y.) and
Conor Gallagher (Belle Harbor, N.Y.). Darnell earned the highest finish among Lion runners, crossing the finish line in fourth place with a time of 27:57.01. Gallagher clocked an eighth-place time of 28:20.60, while freshman
Brian Michels (Patchogue, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut with a 15th-place showing of 28:57.62 over the course at Van Cortlandt Park. All runners on the men's side for Molloy finished inside the top-half of the 88-man field, including senior
Tom Dreyer (Floral Park, N.Y.) who began his fall campaign with a 24th-place finish in a time of 30:03.37. Continuing with the results was junior
Shane Martensen (East Islip, N.Y.) (29th - 30:35.90), sophomore
Liam Gallagher (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) (37th - 31.36.99), and freshman
Carey Browne (Amityville, N.Y.) (39th - 31:58.06).
In the 5k race on the women's side, sophomore
Katie Michta (Nesconset, N.Y.) finished as the high Lion with a 16th-place showing (21:26.97) in the field of 126 runners. Next to finish the course was freshman
Gabriella Martins (East Meadow, N.Y.), who opened her collegiate career with a 31st-place finish in a time of 22:19.44. Fellow first-years
Diana Monaco (Center Moriches, N.Y.) (41st - 22:56.06),
Maria Molnar (East Northport, N.Y.) (46th - 23:17.97) and
Megan Doyle (Lynbrook, N.Y.) (54th - 23:45.20) also made impressive debuts in the first race of their cross country college profiles. Sophomore
Nicole Hubert (Middle Village, N.Y.) showcased herself well with a 47th-place finish, crossing the line in a time of 23:18.20.
The Molloy men's and women's cross country teams will next take on the courses of Brookville as the Lions trek to the LIU Post Invitational next Saturday (Sept. 19).
