Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2015) - The Molloy College men's basketball team had another solid first half performance, shooting 50% from the field and 71.4% from the foul line. Despite the effort, second chance points and a strong effort from the bench helped secure the victory for Assumption as the Greyhounds walked out of Quealy Gymnasium with a 93-90 victory on Sunday (Nov. 29).
Molloy (0-5) and Assumption (3-2) traded scores for much of the first half with the lead changing hands three times. Following a 7-0 run produced by foul shots from seniors
Maurice Gatson (New York, N.Y.) and
Brandon Williams (Baldwin, N.Y.)---as well as one of five first-half three-pointers from junior
Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.), the Lions led 44-28 with just over four minutes remaining in the first half. Though the visitors cut the lead, a lay-up from sophomore
Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had the maroon and white up 48-33 with two minutes to go but Assumption ended the half on an 8-0 run thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Mat Sulda (Hatfield, Mass.) and free throws by freshman guard Justin Tuckson (Stafford, Va.) to end the half down by seven.
The second half also saw a flurry of back-and-forth points, leading to a tied score at four different points, the latest of which came at 84-all with 2:10 remaining after a made free throw by senior forward
Kevin Bowles (Wantagh, N.Y.). Greyhounds sixth man Reilly Reid (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) scored the game's next five points with a two-pointer with under two minutes to play and then a dagger three-ball with 35 seconds remaining. The final seconds came down to free throws, as Marquardt hit a three-pointer to cut the Greyhounds' edge to 91-88 but senior guard Julian Aiken (Randolph, N.J.) hit a final pair of free throws with under five seconds to play and the Lions mustered a Gatson lay-in at the buzzer to provide the final margin.
Marquardt had a game-high 28 points for the Lions, making six three-pointers and falling one shy of tying a record that he owns with four others for the most three-balls made in a single game by a Molloy player. The junior had a team-high six rebounds, as well, while Williams collected a double-double (12 points, 10 assists). Freshman guard
Chris O'Reilly (Colts Neck, N.J.) made the most of his first career start with nine points on three long-range jumpers, to go along with two boards and two helpers in 20 minutes of action. Also providing ample action off the bench was senior center
Chucks Obunse (St. Albans, N.Y.) who had eight points and two blocks.
Leading the Greyhounds was Reid, who did not crack the starting line-up but totaled 24 points on a 9-for-13 shooting performance from the field. Aiken had 15 points and Aussie junior guard Declan Soukup (Melbourne, Australia) added 14. Assumption shot 46% (30-66) from the field and hit 21-of-27 shots from the free throw line, also winning the rebounding battle 36-28. Molloy, meanwhile, shot 55% (34-65) from the field but was undone by a 67% performance from the charity stripe (10-15).
The Lions will look to secure their first win on Wednesday (Dec. 2), when they face off against the Chargers of Dominican College at 7:30 p.m. in Quealy Gymnasium.
