Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 6, 2015) - The Molloy College men's soccer team utilized early goals from junior forwards
Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) and
Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) to ensure what would become a 3-0 victory over Assumption Tuesday evening at Multi-Sport Stadium.
Both Molloy (6-3) and Assumption (1-7-3) barely had time to breathe before Whyte peppered the cage and beat freshman keeper Zach Rowell (Haverhill, Mass.) just 41 seconds into the contest for the game's first goal. It would be the second straight goal Whyte scored via a penalty kick, and his fourth successful penalty shot in as many attempts. Four-and-a-half minutes later, Poetzsch would etch his name onto the scoresheet following an assist by sophomore forward
Lucas Munoz (Hicksville, N.Y.) The duo caught Rowell off his line and Poetzsch buried a shot into the lower left corner of the net to give the Lions a two-goal edge very early into the match. Those were the only markers of the first half as Molloy outshot Assumption by a 7-4 tally, with the Greyhounds only getting two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes versus sophomore goalie
Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.).
The home side would come out firing in the second half, as the Greyhounds tallied 13 shots to Molloy's seven. Tappeto, however, stopped all six shots on goal against him to keep the shutout in tact. The maroon and white put on just enough pressure to keep Assumption honest, and Whyte would tally his second goal of the game and eighth of the season with 9:24 to play in the game. The junior forward used his speed and agility to beat all of the defenders to the box, where his shot skipped past Rowell and into the lower left corner. It was the first time since the opening game of the season that Whyte recorded a two-goal brace, as he scored twice in a 2-1 win at Nyack on Sept. 5. Whyte and Poetzsch combined for six of the team's seven shots on goal, while sophomore
Dale McNevin (Centereach, N.Y.) was credited with the other shot on target for Molloy.
The Molloy College men's soccer team will return to conference action on Friday (Oct. 9) as the Lions begin their Western New York trip with a matchup in Rochester against Roberts Wesleyan. Kickoff from the Flower City is set for 7:30 p.m.
