(Oct. 31, 2015) - The Molloy College men's soccer team fell in its 2015 season finale on Saturday (Oct. 31) as Mercy scored two late goals to earn a 4-1 victory in Dobbs Ferry. The Mavericks, with the win, wrap up their season at 6-9-1 and 4-5-1 in East Coast Conference play. Molloy falls to 10-6 overall and 5-5 to close out the fall campaign.
The Mavericks got on the board first by scoring an early goal in the seventh minute of action off of a deflection. Molloy pressed and pushed to net the equalizer, finally doing so with under seven minutes to go as junior forward
Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) leveled the game at 1 off of an assist from
Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.). For Poetzsch, it was his team-leading 13th goal of the year and it put the Lions on level terms with Mercy until just after 67 minutes had gone by in the game. The Mavericks struck for the go-ahead goal as freshman midfielder Donovan Cesar (Jamaica, N.Y.) was gifted with a through ball in the midfield and beat red-shirt freshman goalie
Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.) on a breakaway to get the home side back on top in the match. The Mavericks would ice the game in the 87th minute on a goal by sophomore midfielder Haxhi Verjoni (Cornwall, N.Y.) and graduate midfielder Juan Gatti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) added another marker to further cement the Mavericks' victory.
Molloy was outshot in the match by a 19-8 margin, with ten Mavericks shots on target to the Lions' six. Tappeto made six saves in net for Molloy, who were also tasked with defending nine corner kicks while taking just one in the contest. Poetzsch led the maroon and white with five total shots and four targets in the match.
