Men's Soccer Loses Rain-Soaked 5-2 Contest at LIU Post

Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2015) - Amidst persistent rain showers, biting cold winds and an overall sloppy playing surface, the Molloy College men's soccer team lost a 5-2 decision to No. 10 LIU Post on Wednesday at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville. Molloy falls to 10-5 on the year and 5-4 in East Coast Conference competition, while the Pioneers are now 12-1-2 and a perfect 9-0 in ECC play.

The Lions started the game off with good pressure and broke through in the eighth minute of action. Following a misplay by LIU Post keeper Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden), junior forward Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) clanged a shot off the left-side post. The ball caromed to the foot of senior Lucas Munoz (Hicksville, N.Y.), who placed a shot in the upper center portion of the net for the game's first goal. The lead was short-lived, however, as the tenth-ranked Pioneers applied a constant harassment in the Molloy defensive zone and came up with their first tally in the 30th minute when a shot deflected off of a Lions defender and beat red-shirt freshman keeper Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.)

The own goal would open the proverbial floodgates, as senior midfielder Per Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway) put LIU Post up 2-1 at the 33:29 mark with a quick strike from graduate defender Seb Baxter (Saffron Walden, England). The Pioneers scored three goals in a row in the second half to take a 5-1 edge before the Lions got one back as junior forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) converted a penalty kick for the game's final tally. The home side took 29 shots and held Molloy to just nine attempts, with Tappeto making ten saves in net for the Lions.

Molloy concludes its season on Saturday (Oct. 31) when the Lions travel to Dobbs Ferry to face the Mavericks of Mercy College at 3 p.m.
