Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2015) - The Molloy College men's soccer team utilized a three-goal first half to power its way to a 3-0 victory over Daemen on Sunday (Oct. 11) at Dimp Wagner Stadium. With the win, Molloy now improves to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in East Coast Conference play in the 2015 season. The eight wins are tied for the third-most in program history in a single season, a mark that the Lions share with the 1997 club that went 8-4 under then-head coach Tony Violis. Meanwhile, Daemen falls to 2-7-1 in its fall campaign, with an 0-3-1 mark in ECC competition.
The maroon and white took their offensive showcase to the hosts rather quickly, as junior forward
Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) and senior attacking midfielder
Lucas Munoz (Hicksville, N.Y.) combined to take the first three shots of the contest. Each effort missed the target, and Molloy was forced off the scoreboard until the 11:31 mark of the first half when junior forward
Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) stashed a feed from senior
Ryan Fackner (North Babylon, N.Y.) into the bottom right corner of the net past Daemen goalkeeper Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y.). Poetzsch's ninth goal of the season also marked his fifth goal of the week, after scoring one versus Assumption on Tuesday (Oct. 6) and three in a Friday evening tilt at Roberts Wesleyan (Oct. 9).
The Wildcats got their first shot of the game in the 16th minute as freshman midfielder Kyle Tracy (Cicero, N.Y.) sent an effort wide of the goal. Like lightning, Molloy struck forty seconds later as Fackner put a shot past Figler to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Whyte was credited with the assist for his 21st point of the season. Following a miss off the foot of Daemen junior attacking midfielder Nick Sammarco (Lockport, N.Y.), Poetzsch closed the scoring in the 31st minute to put the Lions up 3-0. The junior forward headed home a feed from Fackner to notch a brace and pick up his team-best 10th goal of the 2015 campaign and pull him into a tie with Whyte for the most points on the squad.
Molloy red-shirt freshman goalie
Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.) provided the rest of the highlights for the maroon and white in this contest, making 10 saves for the second time this season to preserve another clean sheet. The performance by Tappeto marks the third time this season that he has blanked an opponent, but his first career conference clean sheet. Despite the victory, Molloy was outshot by Daemen 18-14, including a 10-8 shots on target statistic.
