Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sep. 18, 2014) - On Thursday evening, the Molloy College women's volleyball team lost 3-0 to the New York Institute of Technology, but the scores by set were a lot closer than a shutout would show. After losing the first set, 25-15, the Lions scored 23 points in the second set to the Bears' 25, and 25 in the third set to NYIT's 27. With the win, the Bears improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Lions slipped to 3-5 on the year (1-1 in the ECC).
In the middle set, Molloy had a couple of spurts where the Lions grabbed the lead. Down 11-9, the Lions reeled off five straight points to take the lead. Molloy was ahead as late as the score being 21-19. However, the Bears scored six of the set's final eight points to sneak the 25-23 victory.
Behind 7-2 in the third set, Molloy rattled off nine of the next 10 points to take an 11-8 advantage. For the rest of the match, no squad led by more than three points at a time. Behind 24-22, Molloy scored the next three points off an NYIT service error, and kills by junior
Danielle Williams (Alba, Texas) and senior
Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.). Molloy led, 25-24. However, an attacking error, a service ace and a kill doomed Molloy as that was the pattern of how NYIT won set number three, 27-25.
For Molloy, D. Williams and Berna each had six kills, while sophomore
Ally De Kruyf (Norwalk, Calif.) dished out 19 assists.
