(Feb. 8, 2014) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College men's basketball team defeated East Coast Conference-opponent Roberts Wesleyan College for the second time this season, 78-55 at the Voller Athletic Center in Rochester, N.Y. With the victory, the Lions improved their overall record to 12-10 and their ECC ledger to 9-5. The loss dropped the Redhawks to 9-12 on the year (5-10 in the league).
The Lions shot an outstanding 51.9% from field goal range for the game, resulting in a 28-for-54 mark. Molloy struck from three-point land as well, going 8-for-12 (66.7%). Freshman guard
Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) sunk a trio of three-balls, while sophomore guard
Brandon Williams (Baldwin, N.Y.) and rookie forward
Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) made two each. The Lions grabbed a seven-point lead two minutes into the game. The Redhawks came back, though and cut their deficit to one point by the 14:15 mark. A few strong runs from the Lions throughout the rest of the stanza kept their lead at at least five points. Before the buzzer for halftime sounded, Molloy had built up and notched a 40-27 advantage.
The Lions' second-half lead never went below 11 points, and after the 10:00 mark stayed over 19 points. Molloy cruised through the second period to lock down its ninth ECC victory of the season. The Lions' 9-5 conference slate puts them tied for third place in the ECC standings with LIU Post and Bridgeport.
For Molloy, junior guard
Matt McLeod (Greenlawn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 20 points, while senior forward
John Petrucelli (Hicksville, N.Y.) netted 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and had five steals. Morris recorded 12 points on the day.
For the Redhawks, Isaac Medeiros had 16 points and nine rebounds, while Tyrel Dixon had 10 points. Patrick Downer grabbed 13 boards.
