Volleyball Bested by Daemen in ECC Match, 3-1

Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2014) - On Sunday, the Molloy College women's volleyball team won the first set, but fell in the next three versus East Coast Conference-foe Daemen College. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 2-25 overall and 2-12 in the conference. The Lions now sit at 11-16 and 5-9 in ECC matches.

In the first set, the Lions trailed early in the match by just a couple of points. A 4-0 run -- all from Wildcat errors -- put the Lions ahead, 11-9. The two teams traded leads before Molloy rattled off three of the next four points to go up, 23-20. Daemen would bring it to 24-23 before Lions' senior Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) clinched the first set for the Lions via a kill.

The Lions scored the first four points of the second set via two kills from junior Danielle Williams (Alba, Texas) and another by senior Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.). Both sides swapped leads until the match was tied at 14-14. A 3-0 run, followed by a 4-0 burst, put the Wildcats ahead, 21-16. Leading 24-21, the Lions survived two set-points, but Daemen tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 set-win.

Molloy had trouble early in the third set. The Lions trailed 10-3 before battling back to a one-point deficit numerous times. Then, a 4-0 run had the Wildcats ahead 21-16 in the set. The Lions survived two-set points, but fell, 25-22.

Daemen did not lead the fourth set until late, as Molloy looked to even the match at two sets apiece. The Lions were up 17-16, before a 4-0 run by the Wildcats put the home squad up, 19-17. Molloy fought, but never regained the lead as it dropped the fourth set, 25-21 and in-turn, the match, 3-1. 

For the Lions, Berna led her squad with her fifth double-double of the season (16 kills, 11 digs), hitting at a .323 clip.  D. Williams contributed with 14 kills and seven digs in the match.

S
ophomore setter Ally De Kruyf (Norwalk, Calif.) added to her Molloy single season assist record with 37 in the contest. Junior Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) registered 17 digs, tying her season-high in that category.

Head Coach Billy Corrao and his squad return to Long Island with a match at Dowling College on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. The Golden Lions swept the first meeting between the two teams back in Rockville Centre on Oct. 7.
