Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2014) - The Molloy College women's volleyball team defeated East Coast Conference-opponent the New York Institute of Technology, 3-1 in the season's "Dig Pink" game at Quealy Gymnasium. Wearing pink headbands and shoelaces to support breast cancer awareness and the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation, the Lions improved to 10-11 overall and 5-5 in the ECC with the victory. Following the defeat, the Bears fell to 9-14 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
The Lions took the first two sets, 25-22 and 29-27. They dropped the third set, 25-18, while closing out the match, 25-18, in the fourth set. A common theme in the match, in the first set neither squad had a lead larger than one point for the early part. Head Coach
Billy Corrao's squad would take complete control with kills from senior
Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) and junior
Danielle Williams (Alba, Texas). A tight second set, extra points would be needed before Molloy would score the final three off of two kills and an NYIT error to take a two-sets-to-one lead. The NYIT Bears scored seven of the last nine points to stay alive in the third set. In the fourth set, with the score tied at 17-17, the Lions would go on an 8-1 run to clinch their 10th victory of the season.
D. Williams' explosive left-handed attack led all players with 14 kills. She was one of four on the squad with 10+ kills -- the others being Appel, sophomore
Grace Cookson (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore
Spencer Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.). Sophomore setter
Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) had a career-high 55 assists in the victory. She fell just three assists short of tying the program's record for a single match (set by Karen Quiambao vs. Dominican College on Oct. 6, 2006). Freshman libero
Samira Escobar (Fountain Valley, Calif.) was very good defensively, registering 22 digs.
Coach Corrao and the Lions return to the Quealy Gymnasium hardwood on Tuesday, October 21 at 6pm when they host conference-foe the University of Bridgeport. The Purple Knights, who were picked as the ECC preseason poll favorites, are currently 14-2 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in the conference.
