Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2014) - Freshman
DJ Hunter's (Baldwin, N.Y.) first collegiate goal couldn't have come in a more meaningful game. On Friday evening at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex, it was a perfect blend of new and experienced on the pitch, as the rookie Hunter scored in the 56th minute of the game to put Molloy ahead 1-0 on Senior Day. That tally would eventually hold as the Molloy College men's soccer team defeated Roberts Wesleyan College, 1-0. Those seniors that were honored and recognized prior to the game certainly helped the Lions better their East Coast Conference ledger to 4-2, which is good for third place in the ECC standings.
One of the team's four seniors was in net for the full 90 minutes for Molloy as
Justin Corke (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made two saves. Fellow seniors
Joey Pinto (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and
Dane Leavy (St. Petersburg, Fla.) guided the Lions from the midfield and the backline, respectively. The fourth and final senior on the squad,
Hamza Elotmani (Casablanca, Morocco) sat out tonight due to an injury.
Hunter's tally was assisted by junior midfielder
Stephen Polimeni (Bellmore, N.Y.), who sent the ball up to Hunter from the middle of John A. Darcy Field. Junior back
George Sinacore (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) cleared the ball out from the Molloy defensive zone. That clear found Polimeni, who in-turn found Hunter sprinting up the field.
The Lions held the slight edge in shots, 12-10, while the corner kick count was even at 3-3. With the loss, the Redhawks dropped to 7-4-2 (3-4 ECC).
Head Coach
Danny Longo and the Lions, who are now 4-7-1 overall, return to action on Sunday to host Daemen College in another ECC tilt. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Rockville Centre.
