Volleyball Bests Queens College in ECC Tilt, 3-0

Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2014) - On Tuesday evening, the Molloy College women's volleyball team started the week off right with a 3-0 sweep of East Coast Conference-opponent Queens College in Flushing, N.Y.  With the win, the Lions improved to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in the league. Following the defeat, the Knights slipped to 8-9 on the year and 3-6 in the ECC. Molloy won the trio of sets by the final scores of: 25-22, 25-19 and 25-17.

The first set was tight as neither squad led by more than three points for the majority of the action. Leading 23-19, the Lions looked to close out the first set with a win, but the Knights fought back and scored three straight points. However, the Lions finally found the final two points -- off a Queens' service error and attack error -- to take the opening game. In the middle set, persistence was the name of Molloy's offensive strategy. The team didn't have a run longer than three-straight points, but continued to tack on points and eventually secure the 25-19 win. The third set proved to be the best for the Lions as they held their hosts to 17 points. A 6-0 spurt to take an 12-7 lead halfway through the set, and a 7-1 run to close out the set, were the two highlights for the match-clinching third game.

For the Lions, junior Danielle Williams (Alba, Texas) continued her strong play recently, with 11 kills tonight to pace the squad. Sophomore setter Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) had 29 assists, while freshman libero Samira Escobar (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and junior Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) posted 22 and 12 digs, respectively. Palmer also had eight kills.

Head Coach Billy Corrao and the Lions return to the hardwood on Thursday, Oct. 16 when they host NYIT at 6 p.m. The Bears are currently 5-4 in the conference (9-13 overall) and sit one spot ahead of Molloy in the ECC standings.
