Men's Basketball Cruises Past Mercy, 94-72

Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2014) - The Molloy College men's basketball squad upped its winning streak to four games with a 94-72 triumph over East Coast Conference-foe Mercy College on Wednesday evening at the Mercy Gymnasium in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.  Junior guard Matt McLeod (Greenlawn, N.Y.) paced the contest with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while senior forward John Petrucelli (Hicksville, N.Y.) poured in 18 points. Senior center Tyler Hammett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) tied his career-high and the program's record for blocks with six.

With the victory, the Lions improved to 6-7 on the year and 4-2 in the conference, while the Mavericks slipped to 1-11 overall (1-5 ECC).

The first half was where all the damage would be done by Molloy. Eight minutes into the period, no team led by more than four points. During the 12:20 to 6:09 span, the Lions kept trying to blow open their lead, reaching advantages of six, seven and eight points. It finally all came together for Molloy at the 5:25 mark when the Lions reeled off a 12-2 run. That burst included back-to-back dunks by freshman guard Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) and Hammett. A Petrucelli running jumper with one second left before the intermission found its way into the net and gave Molloy a 15-point lead (43-28). That was its largest of the half.

Molloy put up another 51 points in the second half on an incredible 65.5% shooting from field goal range (19-for-29). In this stanza, McLeod went 6-for-6, while rookie forward Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) was 4-for-4 -- all of them from behind the three-point arc.

Of McLeod's 11 rebounds, four came on the offensive end of the glass. Petrucelli complimented his 18 points with six assists, five steals and one block. Hammett scored 10 points to go along with eight boards, two steals and six blocks.

For Mercy, P.J. Walters scored a team-high 13 points, while Kirk Bailey added 10. Olajide Keshinro had eight points, seven rebounds and four blocks.

HAMMETT'S HOUSE: Hammett's six blocks tonight tied a career-high and program record...the Clifton Park native previously swatted away six shots on January 26, 2013 when he did so against the New York Institute of Technology.

UP NEXT: Head Coach Charles Marquardt and the Lions return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 11 for an ECC-showdown with St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y.  Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.  LiveStats and a video webcast will be available right here at www.MolloyLions.com.
