Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), who smashed down nine kills, and junior setter
Kerry MacDonald (Floral Park, N.Y.), who dished out 23 assists.
With the win, the Lions improved to 5-4 overall. Following the loss, the Cougars slipped to 5-6 on the season.
Molloy grabbed the first two sets pretty quickly as the third set began at 6:53 p.m. The Lions took the opening set, 25-18, while earning the set-win in the second, 25-22. The Cougars fought valiantly to take the third set, 25-17. The fourth set looked to be locked up for the Lions early, but when the score was 17-11 in favor of Molloy, the Cougars went on a huge roll. Caldwell reeled off a 9-4 run, which put them behind Molloy by only one point (21-20). The Lions were able to hang on thanks to a service ace from junior
Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.) and a pair of kills from Appel, including the match-clincher.
Sophomore
Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) had three service aces, while freshman setter
Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) complemented MacDonald by adding 17 assists of her own. Moreover, Berna and Palmer combined for 20 digs (10 each), while senior
Euginia Anthony (Jamaica, N.Y.) led the Lions with 16.
The Lions were able to win despite the Cougars leading the match individually in kills (Taylor Zaeske, 24), assists (Lisa Roth, 41), and digs (Jaclyn Del Cid, 30).
