Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2013) - On Saturday, the Molloy College and Dowling College women's volleyball squads met at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. for a make-up contest, originally scheduled for September 24. The Lions were able to grab the opening set, 25-21, before the Golden Lions took sets two through four to earn the 3-1 victory. With the win, Dowling improved to 18-11 overall and 9-5 in the league. Following the defeat, Molloy slipped to 9-18 on the year and 3-11 in the ECC.
In that opening set, the two squads were never separated by more than three points until the score changed to 20-14 in favor of Molloy, following a 4-0 run. Three kills and a service ace from junior
Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) created the burst. In response, Dowling proceeded to reel off four consecutive points to cut its deficit to 20-18. With the Lions ahead, 23-19 and poised to take a 1-0 lead in the match, the Golden Lions snatched the next two points off a kill and a setting error from Molloy. The hosts stayed composed, however, and earned points 24 and 25 off a kill from rookie
Spencer Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and and attacking error from Dowling's Dragana Jelovac.
The second set didn't start out well for Molloy as Dowling jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The Golden Lions held a strong grip on the lead throughout the entire second set. Behind 24-16, the Lions pieced together four straight points to trail by just four.
Spencer Williams and sophomore
Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) started the comeback attempt with a kill apiece, which was followed by an
Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) service ace and an attack error from Jessica Kalbfleisch. After a Dowling timeout, the Golden Lions evened the match at 1-1 on a Kalbfleisch kill.
Molloy struggled in the final two sets, falling 25-14 and 25-18.
For the Lions, Appel led the squad with 10 kills, while Palmer and junior
Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.) had nine each. Stefanovski posted 32 assists, while rookie
Lauren Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y.) racked up 22 digs. Palmer and Stefanovski had nine digs each.
