Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Nov. 9, 2013) - On Saturday evening, the Molloy College men's basketball team kicked off its 2013-14 campaign at the Hubbell Gymnasium in Bridgeport, Conn. versus Southern Connecticut State University. The Owls handed the Lions their first loss of the season, 93-75, to improve to 1-0 overall. Molloy slipped to 0-1 on the year.
The score was pretty close the entire first half of the opening stanza. With 9:31 left, the Owls started to give themselves some breathing room when they popped off a 7-2 run to increase their lead to 31-24. That wouldn't end up being the highwater mark for the Owls in the half as Southern Connecticut closed out the period on a 9-2 run. The Owls headed into halftime ahead, 52-35. That 17-point advantage was the largest margin of their lead in the first half.
The Lions would come out of the intermission to reel off eight consecutive points. Molloy cut its deficit to 52-43 with 18:45 remaining. The Lions weren't able to break the Owls' double-digit lead until 10:31 when senior
John Petrucelli (Hicksville, N.Y.) drove in a lay-up off a fastbreak. At that point, Molloy trailed, 66-57.
Molloy would only be able to get the deficit down to seven points as the Owls continued to add insurance baskets and eventually build a 20-point lead. Following a
Charles Marquardt IV (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) basket with 13 seconds left, the Owls locked down the 93-75 victory.
For Molloy, junior
Matt McLeod (Greenlawn, N.Y.) had 21 points to pace the squad, while senior
Tyler Hammett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) put in 12. Petrucelli and sophomore
Chucks Obunse (Saint Albans, N.Y.) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. McLeod grabbed 10 rebounds to earn his first double-double of the season. Sophomore
Brandon Williams (Baldwin, N.Y.) dished out seven assists, while rookie
