Women's Volleyball Wraps Up 2013 Season Versus Roberts Wesleyan

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2013) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College women's volleyball team concluded its 2013 season with a 3-0 loss to East Coast Conference-opponent Roberts Wesleyan College at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y.  With the win, the Redhawks improved to 10-14 overall and 4-11 in the league. Meanwhile, with the defeat, the Lions slipped to 9-20 on the year and 3-13 in conference play.

The Redhawks won the opening set fairly easy, 25-13, before Molloy would claim the second set, 25-19. Roberts Wesleyan took sets number three and four by scores of 25-15 and 25-18, respectively.

In that second set, the score was pretty close for the entire way. Up 21-17, the Lions ripped off a 4-2 run to earn the victory to even the score of the match at 1-1. Freshman Grace Cookson (Alpine, Calif.) had a kill, while two attacking errors from the guests contributed as well. Sophomore Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) had the 25th point as she smacked down a kill off a set from freshman Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.).

The Lions struggled to find consistency in the third set, much like the first.  Behind 19-14, the Lions saw the Redhawks record six points to Molloy's one in the final stretch to earn the set-victory, 25-15. Four Lions' attacking errors and one setting error was the demise of this run, enabling the Redhawks to go up, 2-1 in the match.

In the fourth set, the Redhawks were ahead 13-12 before they reeled off seven straight points. At 23-14 and trailing, the Lions continued fighting in their final set of the season, knocking out four consecutive points to pull the score to 23-18 in favor of their opponents. Roberts Wesleyan was able to find the final two points afterwards, for the 3-1 match triumph.

For Molloy, Palmer and junior Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.) had nine kills each, while junior Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) recorded eight. Stefanovski dished out 27 assists, while senior Euginia Anthony (Jamaica, N.Y.), who was honored on Senior Day prior to the start of the match, scooped up 15 digs in her final contest as a Lion.
