Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. (Nov. 16, 2013) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College men's basketball team fell to Franklin Pierce University, 85-72, on the second day of the DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic at St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt. With the win, the Ravens improved to 5-0 overall, while the Lions dropped to 1-3 on the season.
With six minutes gone by in the opening period, the Ravens had built up a 10-point lead (16-6). A few minutes later, they notched it up to a 14-point advantage. Molloy reduced its deficit down to six at one point in the latter part of the first stanza, but Franklin Pierce found a string of baskets to further increase its lead. With 2:51 left before the intermission, and the Ravens ahead, 42-34, Molloy reeled off a 9-1 run to close out the half. The Lions tied the game on a three-pointer from senior
John Petrucelli (Hicksville, N.Y.) with 25 seconds remaining. At halftime, the two squads were knotted at 43-all.
Four minutes into the second half, the Ravens found their offensive consistency once again and led by eight (52-44). The closest Molloy got to tying the game in the second half was when freshman
Charles Marquardt IV (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer with 8:26 remaining in regulation to draw the Lions to within four points. From that point on, however, Franklin Pierce put together a burst that increased its lead into double-digits and the Ravens never looked back, securing the 85-72 win.
For Molloy, Petrucelli finished with 29 points to pace the game, while falling one rebound short of a double-double. Two newcomers made a big impact today as sophomore
Chucks Obunse (Saint Albans, N.Y.) and Marquardt IV scored 14 and 13 points, respectively -- both coming off the bench. Marquardt IV went 3-for-4 from downtown. Petrucelli also added six steals.
For Franklin Pierce, five different players scored double-digit points.
