Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2013) - In its penultimate match of the 2013 season, the Molloy College women's volleyball team was defeated by East Coast Conference-opponent Daemen College, 3-0 at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 22-9 overall and 9-5 in the conference, while the Lions slipped to 9-19 on the season and 3-12 in the league.
The final scores of the three sets were: 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23, exhibiting how close the action was. Despite their opposite records, both teams played evenly tonight.
Molloy started the opening set with a 7-1 run, before Daemen eventually tied the game at 13-all. The set remained close for the rest of the way, with Molloy trailing Daemen, 23-21 at one point. Each squad traded a point, which was followed by a Brittany Anthon kill for the Wildcats.
Midway through the middle set, Molloy led 14-13. Daemen reeled off a 5-1 burst, including a pair of service aces, to bring the score to 17-15 in the Wildcats' favor. Down 19-17, the Lions popped off four straight points, which included two kills from junior
Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) and a service ace from freshman
Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.), before Daemen recorded a 6-1 run to take the set, 25-22.
Before Daemen grabbed a 15-12 lead halfway through the third set, neither team led by more than two points. The Wildcats continued to tack on points, while the Lions did the same, eventually moving the score to 22-17 in favor of the guests. Three straight Molloy points brought the Lions back into the fold. Down by only three points at 24-21, the Lions received a kill from sophomore
Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) and a Wildcats' attacking error to cut their deficit to one. However, Ye Wang smacked down a kill to give the Wildcats the 3-0 match-victory.
For the Lions, Appel led the team with 12 kills, while Stefanovski dished out 28 assists. Rookie
Lauren Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and junior
Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.) combined for 30 digs with 18 and 12, respectively. Freshman
Spencer Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) excelled on the defensive end tonight, recording six blocks -- one solo and five assists.
LIONS' RECORD BOOK NOTES: Senior
Euginia Anthony (Jamaica, N.Y.), who will be honored tomorrow prior to the match against Roberts Wesleyan for her contributions to the program over the last four years, is currently sixth on the all-time career digs list with 766 following tonight's contest...Her 300 digs this season find her eighth on the single season record list...Berna now ranks eighth on the all-time single season leaderboard with 244 kills...Stefanovski's 602 assists this season rank her second on the single season record book...Palmer's 47 service aces this campaign are good for fourth in a single season...
Spencer Williams' 76 block assists are fourth-best in a single season.
