Matt McLeod (Greenlawn, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 29 points and brought down 12 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games to open the 2013-14 season, helping the Molloy College men's basketball squad pick up its first win of the year against Felician College in Bridgeport, Conn., 90-81. With the win, the Lions improved to 1-1 overall, while the Golden Falcons slipped to 0-2 on the season.
The Lions scored 39 points to the Golden Falcons' 36 in the first half. Throughout the opening period, no club led by more than six points as it was a tightly-contested battle on the hardwood. Molloy excelled in the fast break points category, leading the Golden Falcons, 10-2 in that department. Moreover, the Lions also capitalized off Felician's turnovers, scoring nine points in the opening half off those opportunities.
With 12:16 remaining in the second half, Felician's Tim Massado converted on one of two free throws to help his team get to within five points of the tie (54-49). Molloy popped off an 8-2 run over the subsequent minute and a half to increase its lead (62-51). The Golden Falcons came as close as six points of the tie as late as 15 seconds remaining in the game. However, it was a bit too late as the Lions continued to hit their free throws to keep hold onto their advantage and the eventual triumph. Molloy shot 75.6% from the charity stripe (34-for-45).
For Molloy, McLeod was responsible for 29 points and 12 assists, while senior
John Petrucelli (Hicksville, N.Y.) netted 23 points and had six steals. Sophomores
Brandon Williams (Baldwin, N.Y.) and
Chucks Obunse (Saint Albans, N.Y.) scored 12 points each, while junior
Richard Zoller (Syosset, N.Y.) added 10. Williams completed the double-double by dishing out 10 assists.
For Felician, Anthony Obery scored 25 points to pace the squad, while Jeyvi Miavivululu netted 13 points. J.R. Pringley recorded six assists and scored nine points.
