Women's Volleyball Surprises NYIT with Close Sets, Ultimately Loses, 3-0

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2013) - If somebody only saw sets number two and three from Thursday evening's East Coast Conference women's volleyball contest between Molloy College and the New York Institute of Technology, he or she would probably not guess that the score would end up being 3-0. After a lackluster opening set, where the Lions fell 25-11, Molloy fought tooth-and-nail over the next two. The Lions battled the Bears over the 25-point minimum in set number two, falling 27-25, and had a late comeback in set three that came up short, 25-21.

With the triumph, the Bears moved to 13-1 overall and 3-1 in the ECC. Following the defeat, the Lions dropped to 7-8 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Sophomore Katie Gallagher (North Massapequa, N.Y.) had 10 kills for the Lions, while rookie setter Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) dished out 15 assists.

Down 22-18 in the second set, Molloy ripped off five straight points. Stefanovski was the server for the entire burst. The two squads traded a point back and forth, until the Bears found the icer with a pair of kills and a service ace. In the third set, NYIT grabbed a sizeable lead thanks to an early 8-0 run. Up 23-15, the Bears seemed poised to ease to the match victory. However, the Lions continued to battle and strung together a 6-1 run to cut their deficit to 24-21. That would be the end of the spurt, though, as the Bears won on a kill from Savannah Donarski.

Head Coach Billy Corrao and the Lions return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 8 when they play at Bridgeport at 7 p.m.
