Women's Volleyball Shows Guts; Falls to Queens, 3-2

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2013) - On Tuesday evening, the Molloy College and Queens College women's volleyball teams battled in an epic five-set match at the Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y.  The set-wins alternated back-and-forth between Queens-Molloy-Queens-Molloy over the first four, before the Knights took the deciding set, 15-13. Queens improved to 10-9 overall and 4-7 in the East Coast Conference. With the loss, the Lions slipped to 9-14 on the season and 3-7 in the league.

Queens won sets one and three by scores of 25-19 and 25-14, while Molloy recorded wins in sets number two and four by the same score of 25-19. The Knights took the fifth set, 15-13.

In the first set, Molloy had cut its deficit to 14-12, before an 8-2 run from the Knights put some separation between the two squads. In the second set, Molloy was ahead, 9-4, coming out of the gate motivated. The Knights pieced together another run, this time a 12-1 burst that gave them a 15-10 lead. The Lions answered that with four straight points. With an 18-16 advantage, the Knights were on the wrong end of a 9-1 run as the Lions took the second set in thrilling fashion. In that final burst, freshman Grace Cookson (Alpine, Calif.) and sophomore Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) had two kills each, while junior Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded a service ace.

The third set didn't treat the Lions well as at one point Molloy trailed Queens, 22-8. The Lions scored six of the set's final nine points to change the score, although they still fell to the Knights, 25-14. The hosts came back in the fourth set, however, determined to force that fifth and deciding set. The final set was tied as late as 11-11. A Molloy error, followed by the two squads trading a kill each made the score 13-12 in favor of Queens. Then, MacKenzie Hamilton notched a kill for Queens, which was followed by a service error from the Knights' Else Buchmiller. The guests picked up the match's final point when Francesca Indoni knocked down a kill.

For Molloy, Palmer had 12 kills, while Berna racked up 11. Freshman Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) dished out 38 assists, while rookie Lauren Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y.) picked up 29 digs. The Lions had a particularly difficult time in the serving arena, committing 15 errors.
