Men's Soccer Falls in Offensive Showcase with St. Thomas Aquinas, 6-5

Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Oct. 26, 2013) - The Molloy College men's soccer team put on an offensive clinic with St. Thomas Aquinas College in an East Coast Conference-matchup on Saturday afternoon in Sparkill, N.Y.  With the score knotted at 5-5 in the final minute of the game, the Spartans' Julius Werner scored with two seconds remaining in regulation for the game-winner. WIth the victory, the Spartans improved to 6-6-1 on the season and 3-5 in the league, while the Lions dropped to 5-8-3 overall and 3-4-3 in the ECC.

The scoring got started early in this one as St. Thomas Aquinas' Denis Lazo-Cruz netted a goal in the third minute. Molloy took a 2-1 lead when senior Jovani Ramos (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and senior Dan Brown (Queens, N.Y.) scored in the 11th and 17th minutes, respectively.

STAC found an equalizer in the 19th minute, before the Lions took another advantage. Junior Ibrahima Diarra (Hollis, N.Y.) scored in the 26th minute from the top of the box off a feed from Brown. Molloy held a 3-2 lead at the intermission.

Coming out of halftime, the Lions scored again, this time off the foot of sophomore Ryan Fackner (North Babylon, N.Y.). Brown had his second assist of the day.

St. Thomas Aquinas and Molloy traded goals in the 57th and 58th minutes of regulation, to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Lions. Molloy recorded a goal from Brown -- his second of the afternoon.

Back-to-back markers from the Spartans in the 63rd and 68th minutes, both by Michael Corbi, tied the game at 5-all.

Then, with two seconds left in regulation, Werner scored off a header to give the Spartans a 6-5 triumph.

For the Lions, senior goalkeeper Mario Gagliano (Manhasset, N.Y.) made eight saves, while the Spartans' Nathan Mangione had nine saves.

Head Coach Danny Longo and the Lions return to action for their final game of the 2013 regular season on Saturday, November 2 when they host Philadelphia University in non-league play. The game is slated for a 12 p.m. kickoff at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
