Women's Volleyball Slips in 3-0 Defeat to Dowling

Box Score OAKDALE, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2013) - On Tuesday afternoon, the Molloy College women's volleyball team lost to East Coast Conference-opponent Dowling College, 3-0 in Oakdale, N.Y.  After a lackluster 15-point performance in the first set, the Lions came within two and three points of tying the score in sets two and three, respectively, but ultimately fell to the Golden Lions. With the win, Dowling improved to 14-9 on the year and 5-4 in the league, while Molloy dropped to 9-12 overall and 3-5 in the ECC.

The Lions were able to keep the middle set to a three-point deficit throughout. Down 19-16, Molloy reeled off four-straight points to take a one-point advantage. Three kills by junior Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) contributed to that spurt. Dowling then put together a 5-0 streak to grab the lead back. A trio of points in consecutive order allowed the Lions to cut their deficit to 24-23. However, a kill from Dowling's Jessica Kalbfleisch ushered the Golden Lions to the second set victory.

Behind 2-0 in the third set, Dowling recorded eight straight points to grab the set's momentum back. A 5-1 burst by the Lions, including a pair of service aces by sophomore Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) aided Molloy in getting closer to the tie. The set went back-and-forth with points going both ways, with Dowling holding the lead for the majority of the set. Down 22-21, the Golden Lions ripped off four-straight points to win the set, and in turn, the match.

For Molloy, Appel, Palmer and junior Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.) had seven kills each, while freshman setter Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) distributed 26 assists. Rookie Lauren Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had 12 digs. In addition, Palmer notched five service aces.

Head Coach Billy Corrao and the Lions return to action on Thursday, Oct. 24 when they host ECC-foe Mercy College at 6 p.m.  If you're unable to attend the game, www.MolloyLions.com will carry an audio/video broadcast, as well as LiveStats.
