Women's Volleyball Remains Undefeated in Conference; Defeats Queens, 3-1

Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2013) - The Molloy College women's volleyball team remained undefeated in the East Coast Conference (2-0) and evened up its overall record (7-7) with a 3-1 victory over Queens College in Flushing, N.Y. on Tuesday evening. Following the loss, the Knights dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Junior Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) led the Lions in the kills department (12), while fellow junior Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.) had 11. Junior Kerry MacDonald (Floral Park, N.Y.) and freshman Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) recorded 19 and 18 assists, respectively. Senior libero Euginia Anthony (Jamaica, N.Y.) had 14 digs today.

Despite Queens grabbing the opening set, 25-19, the Lions would not get down on themselves and take the next three (25-17, 25-18, 25-12). In the second set, with an 18-17 lead, Molloy rattled off seven consecutive points. Three kills by Appel contributed to that burst.

In the third set, Molloy was up, 19-16. The Lions once again found a string of points that put the Knights in a 2-1 hole. A kill from freshman Grace Cookson (Alpine, Calif.) and then a kill from Appel helped change the score to 22-16 in favor of the Lions. Rookie Spencer Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Berna had the final pair of kills to ice the third set.

The fourth set, which ended up being the most lopsided, started off with a 5-0 run. Stefanovski had two service aces in that spurt. Ahead 6-3, the Lions fired off five straight points with kills from Berna, Stefanovski, and sophomore Katie Gallagher (North Massapequa, N.Y.). An attacking error by Queens and a service ace from Anthony gave Molloy an 11-3 advantage. With a 19-11 lead, the Lions ended the game with another streak -- this time a 6-1 run to win the match. Three attack errors by Queens helped seal the triumph.

Head Coach Billy Corrao and the Lions are back in action on Thursday when they host New York Institute of Technology (12-1, 2-1 ECC) in the Quealy Gymnasium beginning at 6:00 p.m. A live broadcast, as well as LiveStats, will be available through www.MolloyLions.com.
