Men's Soccer Drops ECC Affair with UDC, 5-2

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2013) - Although it ended up being a loss, the Molloy College men's soccer team showed a lot of heart and passion in this afternoon's East Coast Conference battle with the University of D.C. at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. Down by a 5-0 deficit with only 14 minutes remaining until the clock expired and the opportunity to just pack it in, the Lions kept fighting. Molloy would end up scoring two goals in the ensuing time to conclude the game at 5-2 in favor of UDC.

With the win, the Firebirds are now 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the league, while the Lions dropped to 3-4-2 on the season and are now 2-1-2 in the conference.

A pair of UDC goals before the intermission and a trio after, was the way the game went. Molloy did have some chances to score with 15 shots throughout the game -- with 10 of them coming in the second half -- but the right mix of passing and shooting wasn't found. Not until the 77th minute anyways.

Molloy, very quiet on the offensive front after missed opportunities, found the back of the netting twice at the very end of the contest. Sophomore Ryan Fackner (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored in the 77th minute on a header he flicked in off a pass from senior Anthony Morais (Mineola, N.Y.). The Lions' second marker came off the foot of senior Tom Garcia (Westbury, N.Y.), who blasted the ball past the diving Firebirds' goalkeeper Ever Alvarez (84th minute).

For the Firebirds, Nenad Smiljanic had the hat trick, which featured two goals scored off penalty kicks, while Felix Angerer and Atunde Akum had one standard goal apiece. Adam Spinks was responsible for two assists today.

In net for Molloy, redshirt-junior Justin Corke (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was peppered with shots after a pourous defensive showing today. Two fouls in the box by his teammates didn't help matters either as he struggled giving up five goals, while making a pair of saves. For the Firebirds, starter Louis Connor logged 73+ minutes, giving up no goals and making two saves. Alvarez had one save.

Head Coach Danny Longo and his troops return to action on Saturday when the Lions host the University of Bridgeport beginning at 5:00 p.m. This weekend serves as Homecoming for the College, and the game will be played at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex. If you're unable to attend, a live broadcast from the Lions Sports Network will be carried via www.MolloyLions.com.
