Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2013) - The Molloy College women's volleyball team was given a tough fight on Tuesday night at Quealy Gymnasium in non-conference action. After taking the opening two sets from Pace University by scores of 25-19 and 25-23, the Setters battled back and earned the win in set #3, 25-23. Following the same pattern as the previous three sets being extremely tight, the Lions scored 25 points to the Setters' 23 to earn the match-triumph.
With the win, the Lions improved to 8-10 overall, while the Setters slipped to 4-16 on the year.
Molloy led by as many as 10 points in the first set. In the first two sets, the Setters did attempt comebacks, but the Lions held them off to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Pace jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the third set and never relinquished the lead. The Setters maintained a lead of three or four points throughout the match. While the Lions were able to cut their deficit down to one point a few times, Pace secured the 25-23 set-victory. In that third set, Lions' sophomore
Cassie Palmer (Norwalk, Calif.) reeled off four straight service aces.
In the fourth set, Molloy was behind 21-18. Three kills by junior
Sam Berna (Massapequa, N.Y.) and a service ace from senior
Euginia Anthony (Jamaica, N.Y.) contributed to the Lions putting together a 6-0 run to grab a 24-21 lead. Pace was then able to score two points to cut its deficit to 24-23 and inch closer to forcing a fifth set. However, a kill from Palmer sealed the victory for Molloy, 3-1.
For the Lions, Berna and Palmer tied for the team-high with 13 kills each, while rookie setter
Alley Stefanovski (North Chili, N.Y.) dished out 36 assists. Anthony had 26 digs, while Stefanovski recorded 17.
Head Coach
Billy Corrao and the Lions return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. and take on East Coast Conference-opponent Roberts Wesleyan College. The opening serve is slated for 12 p.m.
