In the history of the Molloy softball program, few names are as recognizable as Megan Butterworth's. Named All-East Coast Conference First Team all four years, Butterworth's dominance in the circle helped lead the Lions to three ECC Championships, two NCAA East Regional Championships, and two appearances in the Division II National Championship.
Butterworth's name still sits atop the career records for innings pitched (794.2), wins (90), and shutouts (40) while ranking second all-time in strikeouts (948), strikeouts per seven innings (8.35), earned run average (1.62), complete games (75), games started (118), and appearances (143). Not just a threat in the circle, Butterworth graduated with a .292 batting average, totaling 104 runs scored, 171 hits, 45 doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 76 runs batted in.
Butterworth tossed a two-hitter, striking out nine batters in a 6-0 victory over Caldwell University to advance the Lions to the 2013 East Super Regional against Adelphi. The pitcher returned to the circle in the first of two games against the Panthers, fanning 13 batters while allowing only two hits. Needing one final victory to earn a spot in the National Championship Tournament for the second time in her career, Butterworth struck out seven batters in a five-inning mercy rule victory, 8-0.
Butterworth was also the starting pitcher for the Lions' first five games in the Division II National Championship Tournament (2010 and 2013).
Through her storied career with the maroon and white, Butterworth was selected All-Region all four years by both Daktronics and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, totaling seven selections including being tabbed the 2013 East Region Pitcher of the Year by Daktronics.
As a senior, helping Molloy reach the National Championship, she ranked in the top-25 in the nation in earned run average (1.29, 13
th), hits allowed per seven innings (4.87, 21
st), shutouts (13, 3
rd), strikeouts (279, 9
th), strikeouts per seven innings (8.8, 15
th), and victories (27, 6
th). Her performance earned her the ECC Pitcher of the Year, Daktronics East Region Pitcher of the Year, NFCA and Daktronics All-American Second Team, CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team, and the E.C.C. Award.
