No. 2 Baseball Falls to No. 1 Bentley in Game One of Super Regional

Waltham, Mass. – The second-seeded Molloy baseball team began the NCAA East Super Regional Thursday afternoon falling to the top-seeded Bentley Falcons, 7-2, at DeFelice Field. The Lions move to 41-10 while the Falcons improve to 43-14.

How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning, junior Charlie Imhof led off the second inning with a double before senior Sean Serrano walked, putting runners on first and second with no outs on the board.
  • Bentley would escape the inning in the next seven pitches collecting a pop out and an inning ending 5-4-3 double play.
  • The Lions once again would put two runners on in the third, but the home team would get out of it with a ground out.
  • The Falcons cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a run scoring following a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Bentley added to their lead, 4-0, in the fourth after a three-run home run from Jimmy Mitchell.
  • The home team used the long ball once again in the fifth with a solo home run to extend their lead, 5-0.
  • The cardinal and white started the top of the sixth with a single from junior Brian Sanchez and a walk from senior Sean Welsh. Once again Bentley would come away unharmed, inducing a double play before ending the inning with a foul pop out.
  • The home team opened their lead, 7-0, with RBI singles in the sixth and eighth inning.
  • Molloy loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth, setting up a two-RBI single from junior Joe Burriesci to cut the deficit down, 7-2.
  • The Lions would have two runners on coming down to their final out, but a foul pop out ended the contest and clinched the victory for the Falcons, 7-2.
Top Performances
  • Sanchez collected a game-high four hits.
  • Imhof totaled two hits while Burriesci drove in two runs.
  • Junior James Sill got the start on the mound tossing five innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits.
  • Out of the bullpen, junior Thomas Charlwood pitched 2.2 innings surrendering one earned run on five hits.

Molloy returns to DeFelice Field Friday, May 22 for game two of the NCAA Super Regional. The Lions will serve as the contests home team beginning at 2:00 p.m.
