Offense Slugs Baseball to DH Sweep at Caldwell

Caldwell, N.J. – The Molloy baseball team extended their winning streak to 11 straight games, setting a program record Monday afternoon as they swept the Caldwell Cougars, 18-2 and 13-1, at Kiwanis Oval. The Lions improve to 20-7 on the campaign, while Caldwell moves to 7-18.
 
Game One: Molloy 18, St. Caldwell 2
  • RBI singles from junior Brian Sanchez and sophomore Steve Mulqueen had the Lions ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
  • After Molloy scored a run following an error with two outs in the second. Senior Sean Welsh plated Sanchez with an RBI triple and would come around to score after junior Charlie Imhof brought him in with a single to increase the lead, 5-0.
  • The cardinal and white stayed hot at the plate, adding another six runs in the third to open an 11-0 lead. The top half of the third was highlighted by junior Mike Sweeney who cleared the bases with a double and Welsh who collected his second run scoring triple to account for four of the six runs scored in the frame.
  • Caldwell plated a pair in the bottom of the third to get on the board, 11-2, before junior Jack Vallario got the run back in the top of the fourth with a run scoring single.
  • Vallario didn't stop there, as he connected for a grand slam in the fifth to extend the Lions lead, 16-2. The Molloy offense capped game one, 18-2, after freshman Isiah Marino blasted his first career home run with a two-run shot over the left center field fence in the top of the sixth.
  • The contest was scheduled for nin innings, but due to an agreed upon rile rule after seven innings during pregame, the game would end following the seventh.
  • Vallario drove in a career-high six
  • Sweeney drove in three while scoring three times.
  • Welsh collected two triples, two RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Marino and Mulqueen drove in two runs each.
  • Freshman Matt Nowlan tallied his first career hit.
  • On the mound, junior Thomas Charlwood picked up his second win of the season tossing five innings allowing two unearned runs and striking out two.
Game Two: Molloy 13, Caldwell 1
  • As they did in game one, the Lions got to work in the first inning after Mulqueen blasted a three-run home run to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
  • Molloy put together a six-run second to open the lead, 9-0. Junior Anthony Marsillo singled home senior Sean Serrano before scoring following a fielder's choice. Later in the frame, Welsh collected his third triple of the afternoon to drive in two runs and crossed the plate following a wild pitch.
  • The fourth saw Serrano drive in a pair with a double down the left field line to extend the lead, 11-0.
  • In the sixth, sophomore Ryan Zegers collected his first collegiate hit and RBI with a single up the middle to score freshman John Franco.
  • Vallario capped the frame with a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 13-0.
  • Caldwell would see a run cross the plate in the sixth before the Lions would close the afternoon victorious, 13-1.
  • Mulqueen blasted his fifth home run of the season while driving in three.
  • Serrano and Welsh collected two RBI each and scored once.
  • Redshirt senior Sean Mileti earned the win, pitching four innings allowing one hit and striking out three.

Molloy returns to East Coast Conference play Friday, April 10 to begin a four-game series against Mercy at Mitchel Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
