Baseball Clinches ECC Regular Season Title with Victory At STAC

Pomona, N.Y. - For the fourth time in five seasons, the Molloy baseball team has clinched the outright East Coast Conference regular season title picking up a 17-4 triumph over St. Thomas Aquinas Friday afternoon at Clover Stadium. The Lions win streak now sits at 22, improving to 31-7 overall and 21-2 in East Coast Conference play while the Spartans move to 23-17 and 12-11 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning, senior Jeremy Taggart doubled down the left field line in the top of the second to score two runs to put the Lions in front, 2-0.
  • The Lions added to their lead, 3-0, in the third after sophomore Steve Mulqueen drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
  • Molloy broke the game open in the fifth, sending 15 to the plate en route to a 12-run, 9-hit inning to take a commanding 15-0 lead. The first two runs of the frame came across following singles from senior Sean Welsh and Mulqueen. 
  • After a run scored following an error and a bases loaded walk from senior Sean Serrano, Taggart drove in another two runs with a single into right field before junior Jack Vallario plated a pair with a double to left field.
  • The inning was capped after junior Mike Sweeney plated two runs with a single into right center, before Mulqueen belted a three-run home run into the right field seats.
  • Junior James Sill held the Spartans hitless through the first four innings before surrendering his only hit of the contest in the fifth with a double from Kyle DeCresce.
  • The cardinal and white added two more runs in the eighth on their way to a 17-4 victory. 
Top Performances
  • Mulqueen blasted his eighth home run of the season as part of a four-hit day while driving in five runs for the second game in a row.
  • Taggart drove in a career-high five and collected three hits.
  • Sweeney knocked in two runs.
  • Welsh and junior Brian Sanchez totaled two hits and two runs each.
  • Sill improved to 6-1 on the campaign, tossing seven shutout innings allowing one hit and one walk while striking out seven.
Up Next
Due to inclement weather on Saturday, the Lions and Spartans will resume their series Sunday, April 26 with a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Clover Stadium. Molloy will serve as the home team in game two of the twin-bill set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
