Mike Knapp tossed his third straight complete game while striking out a season-high 10, helping the Molloy baseball team to secure a doubleheader sweep over the Mercy Mavericks, 12-5 and 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions, winners of 14 in a row improve to 23-7 overall and 15-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks move to 19-16 overall and 10-7 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 12, Mercy 5
- The Lions went to work right away, seeing a run cross the plate in the first inning after senior Sean Welsh recorded a sacrifice fly.
- Following a scoreless second frame, Molloy used a seven-run top of the third to break the game open, 8-0. The scoring kicked off after junior Charlie Imhof doubled to plate two. After a run scored following a fielder's choice, senior Sean Serrano ripped a double down the right field line to score a run.
- Junior Anthony Marsillo knocked in a run after a sacrifice fly plated senior Jack Coogan before junior Mike Sweeney capped the inning with a three-run inside the park home run to center field.
- Mercy did not lay down, punching right back with a five-run bottom of the third to come back within three, 8-5. The inning consisted of an RBI double and a pair of two-run singles from Zach Ashline and Matthew Hesselbirg.
- The offensive showing would come to a halt on both sides, as the Lions would allow just two base runners from the fourth through the rest of the game to stifle the Mavericks offense.
- The cardinal and white added three runs in the eighth inning. A run came in following an error, Imhof recorded a sac fly and a RBI single from Jack Coogan helped build the Lions lead to seven, 12-5, where it would stay en route to a game one victory.
- Sweeney paced the offense collecting three hits, three RBI, and three runs scored while belting his second home run of the year.
- Imhof and Coogan drove in two and scored once each.
- On the mound, graduate student JC Kiss improved to 5-1 on the year pitching six innings allowing five runs on six hits.
- Out of the bullpen, sophomore Dylan Schriver tossed three innings of hit less baseball while striking out three to collect his first save of the campaign.
Game Two: Molloy 5, Mercy 2
- As they did in game one, the Lions got to work in the first inning after Imhof blasted a three-run home run to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
- The Mavericks responded in the bottom of the frame, getting one back after Dylan Koch scored following a failed pick off to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.
- The home team continued to claw back, coming within one, 3-2, after Kyle Engmann connected for a solo home run.
- The cardinal and white added on to its lead, 5-2, in the top of the third after Coogan lined a single into center field to plate a pair.
- Mercy threatened in the fourth, putting a runner on third following a triple with one out. Knapp would bear down, stranding the runner on third after striking out two in a row to get out of the inning.
- Knapp would allow just one base runner for the remainder of the contest, clinching the afternoon sweep of the Lions, 5-2.
- Imhof tallied his fourth home run of the season while driving in three.
- Coogan drove in a pair while Welsh and sophomore Steve Mulqueen scored two times each.
- Knapp picked up his sixth win of the season in a complete game effort allowing one earned run on four hits.
