Softball Wraps Up Spring Break With Two Wins

Melbourne, Fla. - The softball team ended the Space Coast Spring Games on a high note, topping both St. Michael's (6-5) and Post (11-6) from the USSSA Complex. Molloy will return home with a record of 5-11, going 4-6 on the trip.

Game One: Molloy 6, St. Michael's 5
  • The Purple Knights took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning, scoring on a wild pitch and a single up the middle.
  • After two scoreless innings, senior Emily McGurk legged out an inside the park home run to the right field fence to cut the deficit in half.
  • St. Michael's would plate three runs on three hits in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 5-1.
  • Back-to-back walks to redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery and senior Mae Savage set up McGurk for a bases-clearing triple to bring Molloy back within two, 5-3.
  • Freshman Alyssa Bueno followed with a pinch hit triple of her own before a sacrifice fly from junior Stevie Dabbadie tied the game at five.
  • Singles from junior Mariah Cepeda and freshman Ava Zicchnelli put runners in place for what would become the game-winning hit, an outfield single from sophomore Casey Kissinger.
  • Freshman Skyler Secondino was nearly perfect through the final two innings of work, allowing just one base runner, to pick up her second collegiate win.
  • McGurk matched a career-best three RBI on a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two extra base hits. Bueno, Cepeda, Zicchnelli, Kissinger, and Montgomery all had hits for the Lions on the afternoon.

Game Two: Molloy 11, Post 6
  • A triple early in the first inning allowed Post to take a lead following a single through the right side from Haley Dibona.
  • Sophomore Megan Wegel led off the home half of the second inning with an outfield single. A ground out, wild pitch, and fielding error brought her home to tie the game before a single up the middle from Savage made it 2-1 in favor of the Lions.
  • Three singles loaded the bases for the Eagles to start the third inning, setting up a two-run double, a sacrifice fly, and an infield single to plate four more runs and make it 5-2.
  • Zicchnielli responded to start the bottom half of the inning with a triple before scoring on an RBI double from Dabbadie. An outfield single from Wegel clawed Molloy back within one, 5-4. Savage came to the plate with the bases loaded and drove in two runs with a single to left field to put the Lions back in front, 6-5.
  • The strong inning continued, once again loading the bases following a walk to McGurk. Zicchnielli plated two runs with a well-placed single down the left field line before both Dabbadie and Wegel drove in runs with outfield singles to make it 11-5.
  • The Eagles would have just four base runners and add one run through the remaining four innings following another successful outing of relief in the circle for Secondino. The freshman had just one run on two hits through 4.1 innings of work.
  • Savage led with three RBI on a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Zicchinelli (2-for-4), Dabbadie (2-for-4), and Wegel (3-for-4) each drove in two runs. Montgomery had a season-high three hits in four at bats while Secondino had a career-high two hits in three at bats.
