Melbourne, Fla. - It was a marathon second day for the softball team at the Space Coast Spring Games with games against both Southern Connecticut State and Lewis going to extra innings. The Lions fell to the Owls of SCSU 10-6 in eight innings to start the afternoon before besting the Flyers 6-5 in nine innings to end the day on top. Molloy sits at 3-7 after the contests.
Game One: SCSU 10, Molloy 6 (8 innings)
- The Owls were aggressive from the opening pitch, leading off with a triple from Izzy Ingersoll. A sacrifice fly plated the games first run before a solo home run made it 2-0.Â
- Freshman Ava Zicchnielli got things started for the Lions in the second inning with an outfield single. A ground out from sophomore Casey Kissinger moved her into scoring position and allowed an RBI single for redshirt junior Alexis Montgomery to cut the deficit in half.Â
- The teams would combine for just two base runners over the next two innings before a two-run double broke the score open for the Owls, 4-1, in the fifth inning.
- It was the Lions' turn in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of three walks to load the bases with just one out. An outfield single form Kissinger drove in two runs before an infield single from Montgomery tied the game at four.Â
- With the top of the order up to start the seventh inning, the Owls put runners on the corners. Pinch hitter Sophia Angiolini sent the ball to the short stop, beating out the throw and scoring a run to put SCSU ahead, 5-4, but the Molloy defense was able to throw out Brianna Pearson trying to score at home to limit the damage to just one run.Â
- Junior Stevie Dabbadie pushed a single through the left side to kick things off in the bottom of the seventh. A ground out from sophomore Gwen Woodsit moved her to second and allowed her to move just 60 feet from scoring following a wild pitch.Â
- Sophomore Megal Wegel's triple to shallow right field tied the game and forced extra innings.Â
- Starting the eighth with a runner on second base, the Owls took advantage of some small ball with a sacrifice bunt and stolen base to put runners on second and third. SCSU would then plate four runs on four hits, a walk, and a ground out to make it 10-5.Â
- A triple from Zicchinelli would bring the Lions within four, 10-6, in the home half of the inning, but they were unable to rally for a second time.Â
- On the contest, Zicchnielli and Montgomery both went 2-for-4 with the freshman scoring two runs and the redshirt junior driving in two.Â
- Kissinger (1-for-4) also added two RBI while Wegel (1-for-3) drove in one.
Game Two: Molloy 6, Lewis 5 (9 innings)
- Defensive miscues from the Flyers set Molloy up for runners on second and third to start the contest.Â
- A single to right center field from Woodsit cleared the bases and gave the Lions an early 2-0 lead.
- Lewis responded with three hits, including an RBI triple, to tie the game.
- Dabbadie would strike out three through the next six innings and allowed just three hits to keep the Flyers off the board.Â
- In the top of the eighth, a fielding error put runners on the corners for Woodsit, who broke the stalemate with an RBI fielder's choice.
- Zicchinelli followed up with a double to make it a two-run game before a walk to Wegel and fielder's choice from sophomore Madeline Millman loaded the bases.Â
- Kissinger drove in another run with a fielder's choice to set the score at 5-2.Â
- Â A bunt single and two sacrifice flies brought Lewis within one in the bottom of the eighth before a triple set up a game-tying infield single from Morgan Spodarek. Dabbadie forced a ground out in the next at bat to keep the Lions in the game.
- A sacrifice bunt from senior Emily McGurk set Dabbadie up for what would become a game-winning infield single in the top of the ninth inning.
- Lewis would threaten to tie the game in the home half of the inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch to get Chloe Kohnhorst to third base. Teagan Berkshire sent the ball to shallow center field, but it was caught by a diving Wegel, who managed to throw out Kohnhorst at home to seal the victory for the Lions.
- Woodsit matched a career-best three RBI in a 2-for-5 day at the plate.Â
- Zicchinelli (1-for-5), Dabbadie (1-for-5), and Kissinger (1-for-4) each drove in a run.
- Montgomery tallied two hits in her three at bats.
- Dabbadie also picked up her first win of the season in the complete game effort, allowing just three earned runs while striking out four.Â
