Kings of the Jungle: Men's Lacrosse Takes ECC Title in OT Thriller at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The second-seeded men's lacrosse team took home the program's first-ever East Coast Conference Championship this afternoon, 11-10 in overtime. Senior goalkeeper Christian Michaels was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player at the conclusion of the game. The team will await the results of the NCAA Selection Show tomorrow (May 4).

Molloy, ranked 15th in the latest national poll from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, improved to 15-4 on the season while Mercy dropped to 10-4.

How it Happened
  • Molloy took control early, taking a 3-0 lead after just five minutes of play following goals from seniors Bryan Diliberto and Dre Alexis and junior Brian Green.
  • Mercy got on the board with a goal from Cole Hunsberger with 3:48 left in the first period, but junior Jake Taylor regained the three-goal advantage with a goal to end the quarter.
  • Michaels made three saves through the first half of the second quarter before Green netted his second of the game, this time on man-down.
  • Sophomore Michael McClain increased the Lions' lead to 6-1 with a goal less than two minutes later.
  • The Mavericks would come within three, 6-3, following two quick goals but Green ended the half with yet another goal to put Molloy in front 7-3.
  • Mercy mounted a comeback in the third quarter, scoring four-straight goals over a period of 12 minutes to tie the contest at seven.
  • Less than one minute into the stalemate, Green netted his fourth of the contest to give Molloy a one-goal lead headed into the fourth quarter.
  • The score would be tied three more times in the fourth quarter, including a man-up goal from Shane Roche on Mercy to force overtime in the final seconds of regulation.
  • Mercy won the opening face-off of overtime, but senior Noah Taylor forced a crucial turnover to get Molloy the ball. Senior Luke Hickam picked up a ground ball in Maverick territory and put the ball in the back of the net to seal the victory and the title for the Lions.

  • Diliberto followed with three points on a goal and two assists.
  • Jake Taylor had a goal and assist for two points while Hickam netted two goals.
  • McClain and Alexis each tallied a goal.
  • Freshman Liam Taylor led with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Junior Rocco Hogan had four ground balls while junior Brandon Pazienza picked up three to go with eight face-off wins.
  • Michaels added a career-high three caused turnovers to go with 13 saves.
