Garden City, N.Y. – The top of the order paved the way for the Molloy baseball team as they topped the Panthers of Adelphi University, 12-6, Friday afternoon at William J. Bonomo Field. The Lions improve to 27-17 on the campaign, while the Panthers move to 20-24.
How it Happened
- Adelphi got on the board in the bottom of the first with a run scoring following an error to go ahead, 1-0.
- Molloy responded in the top of the second knotting the contest at one after sophomore Charlie Imhof drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
- The game would remain tied at one until the top of the fifth, where the Lions plated five to open a 6-1 lead. Graduate student Aidan Larkin drove in two with a single into left field and with the bases loaded, senior Patrick Sanchez cleared the bases with a double to cap the frame.
- The contest stayed at 6-1 until the Panthers put together a four-run inning in the bottom of the seventh on the back of a pair of run scoring singles, a double, and a walk to cut the deficit, 6-5.
- In the of the eight, the cardinal and white tacked on two runs following a bases loaded walk from senior Nicholas Dagnello and a sacrifice fly from Sanchez to increase the lead, 8-5.
- The home team continued to tick away at the deficit plating a run in the bottom of the eighth to stay within striking distance, 8-6.
- In the top of the ninth, the Lions capitalized with the bases loaded once again when redshirt senior Matthew Gonchar brought home three with a double to open the advantage to 11-6.
- Two batters later, Dagnello stepped in and drove in Gonchar to set the contest at 12-6.
- In the bottom of the ninth the Panthers loaded the bases with two outs, but the Lions wiggled out of the jam and secured the victory, 12-6.
Top Performances
- Gonchar collected three hits, three RBI, and three runs scored.
- Sanchez drove in a career-high four runs.
- Dagnello and Larkin knocked in two runs each.
- On the mound, graduate student Ryan Hynes improved to 5-0 after pitching six innings allowing one run (none earned) on four hits and striking out six.
