Niagara Falls, N.Y. – With a pair of victories (9-8 and 15-2) over the Saints of D'Youville Saturday afternoon, the Molloy baseball team clinched the top seed in the East Coast Conference Championship holding a 14-5 in league record while sitting at 25-16 overall. The pair of losses moves D'Youville to 6-9 in ECC play and 12-30 overall.
Game One: Molloy 9, D'Youville 8
- D'Youville pounced quickly in the bottom of the first rallying for four runs.
- Molloy's bats were held silent until the fourth when senior Patrick Sanchez doubled to get the Lions on the board and within three, 4-1.
- The Lions pushed in front, 5-4, in the top of the fifth after scoring four runs in the frame. Junior Sean Welsh started the rally with a run scoring single, senior Nicholas Dagnello walked with the bases loaded to plate a run, and Sanchez knocked in a pair with a single up the middle to close the inning.
- The lead was short lived as the Saints knotted the contest at five in the bottom of the fifth after Alec Boucher singled.
- The cardinal and white capitalized on D'Youville mishaps in the top of the sixth en route to a three-run inning. The first run crossed the plate following a throwing error and the final two runs scored following a pair of wild pitches to reclaim the lead for the visitors, 8-5.
- The home team continued to battle, firing back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to come back within one, 8-7.
- The Saints brought the contest back to all square at eight in the bottom of the seventh after Billy Morris singled.
- The Lions manufactured a run in the top of the eighth. After Welsh walked and senior Thomas Lebrecht reached on a hit by pitch, the duo moved into scoring position after a wild pitch. Graduate student Aidan Larkin stepped into the box and scored Welsh with a sacrifice fly to put Molloy back in front, 9-8.
- In the bottom of the ninth D'Youville threatened to tie the game putting runners on first and second with one out, but for the second straight game freshman Jayden Patel would shut the door, inducing a fly out and a striking out the contests final batter to clinch the one run victory.
Game Two: Molloy 15, D'Youville 2
- Molloy struck in the top of the first after redshirt senior Matthew Gonchar tallied an RBI with a ground out.
- D'Youville wasted no time tying the contest at one in the bottom of the frame following a run scoring single.
- The Lions pushed ahead, 2-1, in the top of the second when sophomore Anthony Marsillo doubled to score Sanchez from first base.
- In the third, Dagnello plated a pair of runners after he singled up the middle to extend the lead to three, 4-1.
- The scoring continued in the fourth. After Lebrecht led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Sophomore Joe Burriesci moved him to third with a ground out and Welsh brought the senior home with a sacrifice fly opening the roads teams advantage, 5-1.
- The cardinal and white broke the game open in the sixth tacking on five runs on just one hit to open a nine-run lead, 10-1.
- Molloy capped the contest with a five run top of the seventh on the back of four hits and go on and finish the triumph, 15-2.
- Senior JC Kiss improved to 4-2 on the campaign after tossing six innings allowing one run on six hits and striking out five.
