Walk-Off Sac Fly Helps Lead Softball to Sweep of Queens

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - It would take extra innings in game one, but the softball team swept the Knights of Queens College this afternoon from Bob Klein Field to win their fourth-straight East Coast Conference contest. The pair of victories set the Lions at 10-18 on the season and 5-1 in league play while the Knights are now 6-16 (2-4 ECC).

Game One: Molloy 3, Queens 2 (9 Innings)
  • After the Knights were sent down in order to open the contest, including two strikeouts from senior Natalie Moussa, the Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • Junior Mae Savage led off with a single through the left side before sophomore Amaya Page was hit by a pitch.
  • A double play would leave just Page on second base before a passed ball moved her just 60 feet from home. A fielding error plated the right fielder for the 1-0 lead.
  • Moussa allowed just two base runners through five innings before a hit by pitch and fielding error helped Queens score two unearned runs to take the lead in the top of the sixth.
  • Needing a run to stay alive, redshirt freshman Alexis Montgomery walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball to start the home half of the seventh. A sacrifice fly from Savage would tie the contest and force extra innings for just the second time this season.
  • The Knights put runners on first and second in the eighth, but a double play between sophomore Mariah Cepeda behind the plate, Moussa in the circle, and sophomore Stevie Dabbadie at first base kept a run off the board and got the Lions out of the inning unscathed.
  • Molloy couldn't manage a base runner in the home half of the eighth, but Moussa stayed strong in the circle, striking out two more batters to keep Knights off the base paths in the ninth.
  • Junior Emily McGurk pushed a single through the right side before stealing second in the home half of the inning. Walks to both Montgomery and Savage set up Page for a sacrifice fly to left field to win the contest.
Top Performances
  • McGurk went 3-for-4 to lead the Lions, also adding a stolen base.
  • Savage, Page, Montgomery, and freshmen Casey Kissinger and Megan Wegel all recorded a hit with Savage and Page each driving in a run.
  • Dabbadie and Montgomery each added stolen bases.
  • Moussa picked up her third win of the season, tossing a complete game. The senior allowed no earned runs and struck out a career-high 10 batters.
Game Two: Molloy 8, Queens 0 (5 Innings)
  • The Lions continued to strike first in game two. Page tallied an outfield single before moving into scoring position from a ground out by Moussa. A fielding error allowed Page to score the first run of the contest.
  • A walk to Cepeda set the table for a sacrifice bunt and ground out to put a runner on third base. Another fielding error by the Knights doubled Molloy's lead.
  • Dabbadie led off the fourth inning with a single before a Cepeda double put two runners in scoring position.
  • McGurk drove in a run with a single through the right side before stealing second.
  • A single through the right side from Savage plated both McGurk and Cepeda to make it 5-0.
  • Moussa started the fifth inning with a single up the middle before Dabbadie drew a walk.
