No. 22 Baseball Edges Caldwell

Uniondale, N.Y. – A seven-run bottom of the sixth helped the No. 22 ranked Molloy baseball team come from behind to take down the Cougars of Caldwell, 9-7, Tuesday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improve to 6-2 on the campaign, while the Cougars move to 2-1.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars struck first scoring a run in the top of the first following an RBI groundout.
  • The Lions answered right back in the bottom of the frame, when graduate student Aidan Larkin drove in a run following a single to knot the contest at one.
  • In the top of the fourth, Caldwell scratched across two runs. One run scored following a double play and the second run came around off an RBI single to push the Cougars in front, 3-1.
  • The bottom of the sixth inning saw the Lions start to time up the pitching and convert for a huge seven-run inning. The scoring began with a pair of runners coming around on consecutive wild pitches to tie the contest at three.
  • Later in the inning, Larkin came to the plate and singled home a run to give the Lions its first lead of the contest, 4-3.
  • Following a walk by sophomore James Sill, senior Nicholas Dagnello stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded with outs. The first basemen connected on a long fly over the center fielders head to clear the bases to open the Molloy lead to four, 7-3.
  • Senior Thomas Lebrecht stepped up next and poked a single to right field to score Dagnello to cap the monster inning and give the Lions a five-run cushion, 8-3.
  • The road team answered right away in the top of the seventh, putting together a three-run inning following an RBI single and a two-run home run to cut the deficit to two, 8-6.
  • The Cougars creeped closer in the top of the eighth scoring a run following an infield single to come within one, 8-7.
  • The cardinal and white got a key insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Lebrecht scored following a balk to get the lead back to two, 9-7.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Cougars were able to get a runner to third with two outs bringing the tying run to the plate, but junior Sean Welsh would slam the door shut striking out the final batter to secure the 9-7 victory.
