Danielle Hippner etched herself in the record book this morning, becoming the program's all-time blocks leader in Molloy's women's basketball victory over Roberts Wesleyan, 79-51, Sunday on Bob Houlihan Court. The Lions improve to 12-11 overall and 5-5 in East Coast Conference play, while the Redhawks move to 2-18 overall and 2-10 in league play.
Hippner broke the program's block career record that was set by Caitlin Wheeler ('09 - '11) who totaled 213 blocks in her career. The center now sits atop the list with 216 career blocks with six games remaining in the regular season.
How it Happened
- The Lions kicked off the morning with a 6-0 rally in the first 52 seconds with baskets from senior Danielle Hippner and juniors Rosa Rizzitelli and Casey Campo.
- Roberts Wesleyan collected its first field goal with 7:59 on the clock to come within three, 7-4.
- A mini 6-0 run over the next 2:05 of game time opened the Molloy lead to nine, 13-4.
- Molloy concluded the first quarter on a 10-2 rally, paced by junior Sophia Yearwood who netted six points, giving the home team a 23-8 lead going into the second quarter.
- The Redhawks began the second stanza quickly, scoring five consecutive points to cut the deficit to 10, 23-13.
- After Yearwood snapped the run with a three-point basket, the road team continued to crawl back into the game, netting six-straight points to shrink the deficit to seven, 26-19, midway through the second quarter.
- Yearwood would once again be the catalyst, scoring the contest's next five points in a 40 second span to reclaim the Lions double-digit advantage, 31-19, with under five minutes remaining in the first half.
- Roberts Wesleyan continued to fight back, putting together an 8-2 run to cut the deficit down to six, 33-27, with 2:09 left in the second stanza.
- The cardinal and white finished the final two minutes of the quarter netting eight straight points. Senior Janel Moore and Yearwood netted a three-point basket each and senior Samantha Muller capped the first half with a lay-up, sending the contest into halftime with Molloy ahead, 41-27.
- Hippner netted six of the Lions' first eight points of the third quarter to extend the home team's lead to 20, 49-29, with 7:38 on the scoreboard.
- The two squads traded baskets over the next five minutes of action with Molloy maintaining its advantage, 56-39.
- The cardinal and white closed out the third stanza shooting four-of-four from the field to open a 65-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- Molloy maintained its 20-point lead for the final 10 minutes of action and go on to secure the victory, 79-51.
