Uniondale, N.Y. - Despite leading 2-0 headed into the final 15 minutes, the field hockey team fell to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-2, in overtime. The loss sets the Lions at 1-8 on the season and 0-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play while STAC improves to 3-5 (2-2 NE10) with the victory.
How it Happened
- Clemence Papleux got the first shot of the game off, but junior Kayla Monique Lipscomb made the save.
- The Lions carried the ball up the field and allowed senior Catherine Amini to get off a shot that went past STAC goalie Ailsa Ogilvie to give Molloy an early 1-0 lead.
- Lipscomb made three more saves in the first half to keep the Spartans off the board including using the support of the defense to fend off eight penalty corners.
- Amini as well as seniors Gianna Mastrocco and Nikki Longhitano all threatened to double the lead after a penalty corner late in the second quarter, but Ogilvie made two saves to keep it 1-0 at the half.
- The Spartans drew an early corner in the second half, but a save from Lipscomb and a defensive save from sophomore Catherine Sasso kept the ball from going in the net.
- Six minutes into the third quarter, the Lions drew a penalty corner. Sophomore Samantha Naples tapped the ball to junior Farah Amarando, who beat the goalie to double Molloy's leads.
- After the Spartans were issued a yellow card to the bench, the visitors appeared to be reanimated and scored two goals in under a minute off the stick of Papleux to tie the contest with nine minutes left in regulation.
- Amarando had her shot blocked in the final three minutes that threatened to give Molloy the lead, but the teams remained deadlocked and forced an overtime period.
- Papleux managed a breakaway opportunity that turned into a penalty stroke just under five minutes into the extra frame. She converted to score her third of the contest and win the game for the Spartans.
