Gavin McAlonie walked off the 14
th ranked Molloy baseball team and propelled the squad to a doubleheader sweep (5-4 and 8-2) against the Knights of Queens College, Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improve to 36-11 overall and 18-5 in East Coast Conference play, while the Knights move to 29-17 overall and 15-8 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 5, Queens 4
- The Lions got off to a quick start plating a run in the first and second inning, on the back of RBI singles from seniors Matt Yip and Anthony Manisero to take a 2-0 lead through three innings of action.
- In the top of the fourth, the Knights took a 3-2 lead on the back of a three-run home run from first basemen Matt Filip.
- Two innings would go by before the Lions would knot the contest at three, following an RBI double from Chris Giardino.
- Queens retook the lead in the top of the eighth, 4-3, after Filip drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
- Needing one to tie and two to win in the bottom of the ninth, the Lions were able to load the bases with one out.
- Yip converted a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Sean Serrano who pinch ran for Giardino, setting the stage for McAlonie. After being down in the count, 1-2, the Miller Place native ripped a single into left field and scored junior JJ DeVito to seal the come from behind victory, 5-4.
- Yip drove in two runs and collected two hits.
- Giardino totaled three hits and one RBI.
- Manisero and McAlonie drove in a run.
- On the mound, junior JC Kiss got the start tossing seven innings allowing three runs, seven hits, and struck out two in the no-decision.
- Graduate student Matthew Fried picked up the victory to move to 7-1 on the season, tossing two runs of no-hit relief and allowing one unearned run.
Game Two: Molloy 8, Queens 2
- Game two kicked off with the Knights plating two runs in the top of the first inning off a single from Marc Cisco.
- Molloy cut the deficit in half, 2-1, with a run scoring following a fielder's choice.
- In the top of the third, McAlonie connected for a three-run homer over the left field fence to push Molloy in front, 4-2.
- The Lions added on to its lead in the fifth, when freshman Anthony Marsillo knocked home a run with an infield single to extend the lead, 5-2.
- The cardinal and white would add three runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory, 8-2, following two runs crossing the plate off an error and an RBI groundout from junior Patrick Sanchez to earn the doubleheader sweep.
- McAlonie drove in five runs and hit a home run.
- Sanchez and Marsillo knocked in a run each.
- Senior Ryan Hynes tossed a complete game, allowing two runs, four hits, and struck out five to improve to 9-1 on the campaign.
